Dr. Smith is a Michigan native who earned his undergraduate degree graduating with honors from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He remained in Ann Arbor to attend the University of Michigan Medical School. Dr. Smith completed a surgical internship at the University of Michigan Medical Center as well as his orthopaedic residency. Upon finishing his residency, he was awarded the “Parke-Davis Research Award” at the University of Michigan. He then moved to Columbus, Georgia where he completed a one year sports medicine fellowship under the direction of Dr. Jack C. Hughston at the Hughston Orthopaedic Clinic.
Dr. Smith joined Columbia Orthopaedic Group in 1986 and specializes in arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine. He has served as the Head Team Physician for the University of Missouri athletic department since 1991; he recently received the “Sports Medicine Hall of Fame Award” by the Missouri Athletic Trainer’s Association for outstanding service, dedication and contribution in the field of Sports Medicine (June 2010). He also treats high school and college athletes from across the region. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Missouri-Columbia, and most recently (2010), Dr. Smith was appointed Director of the Division of Sports Medicine at the University of Missouri in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, as well as co-director of the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program. These roles highlight his commitment to education and research in the field of sports medicine.
Dr. Smith is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and also as a subspecialty, board certified in Sports Medicine. He is a member of the numerous organizations such as the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and Arthroscopy Association of North America. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Columbia Regional Hospital from 1998 until 2009.
Dr. Smith has numerous scientific publications. The most recent include a review article on Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) reconstruction-an update on new techniques (Current Orthopaedic Practice — Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins (2011), London). Also, he is a contributing author to a book on surgical techniques, his chapter is on Double Bundle ACL Reconstruction (edition in progress Elsevier, (2011)).
As far as teaching, Dr. Smith finds great pleasure in demonstrating innovative techniques to other surgeons in laboratory and operative settings. He is also actively engaged in clinical research and development of new minimally invasive knee and shoulder procedures. His particular areas of interest include ACL reconstruction, as well as arthroscopic shoulder stabilization and arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. Currently, he is involved in national clinical research trials involving ACL reconstruction techniques, especially related to the minimally invasive “All-Inside” procedure. Dr. Smith is one of three surgeons from across the country conducting this research. The two-year follow-up results of the first study verify less postoperative pain and similar knee stability with this new minimally invasive ACL reconstruction done through three small incisions, in comparison to traditional ACL reconstruction. In addition, Dr. Smith actually performed the very first “All-Inside” double bundle ACL reconstruction, placing two tendon grafts across the knee joint to replace the ACL which more closely reproduces normal ACL anatomy. The minimally invasive All-Inside ACL reconstruction approach continues to be a focus in his clinical practice to optimize outcomes for these significant injuries.
Besides Dr. Smith’s involvement with research and education in sports medicine, he also participates in research that advances orthopedic knowledge in order to provide excellence in patient care both in the clinic and the operating room. Specifically, he is one of two surgeons nationwide to launch the International OrthoIllustrated Surgical Outcome Registry (SOS) –a web based solution to monitor patient reported outcomes.
Dr. Smith’s practice philosophy is based on personalized patient care. He truly enjoys patient interaction, not just from the standpoint of helping his patients with their orthopedic problem, but getting to know them on a personal basis. This provides the foundation for maintaining excellence in his medical practice — it truly is about the whole person. Other individuals working directly with Dr. Smith on his team are Stephen Miller, PA-C, Lindsey Scheets, ATC and James Ronan, who assists administratively and clinically with research and development.
Dr. Smith and his wife, Karen, have five children. He enjoys coaching youth basketball, playing golf when time allows, and staying very active in the local community.
